De Franse kunstenaar Pierre Bonnard was een meester in het weergeven van intieme alledaagse taferelen. Dit wasvrouwtje is daar een prachtig voorbeeld van. De kleine gestalte met de grote mand roept een gevoel op van eenvoud en vertedering. Dit wordt versterkt door het passerende hondje.
Bonnard bouwde de voorstelling op uit platte vlakken, waar de techniek van de lithografie zich goed voor leent. De grijze straat met witte keien vult een groot deel van de voorstelling. Het donkere silhouet van het wasvrouwtje steekt sterk af tegen de lichte achtergrond. Deze manier van afbeelden is afgeleid van de Japanse prentkunst. Een andere inspiratiebron was het schaduwtheater van prentkunstenaar Henri Rivière. In het cabaret Le Chat Noir werden voorstellingen opgevoerd met uit zink uitgesneden figuren, die als silhouetten verschenen op een wit doek met een lamp erachter. Bonnard en zijn collega-kunstenaars waren regelmatig in het publiek te vinden.
Het wasvrouwtje is onderdeel van het Album des peintres-graveurs. Dit album bevatte 22 prenten in diverse stijlen en technieken, gemaakt door 22 verschillende kunstenaars. Het werd voor 150 francs aangeboden door kunsthandelaar Ambroise Vollard. Door het uitgeven van zo’n verzamelalbum speelde hij in op de populariteit van de prentkunst.
