28 September 2018
Failure is no fun, but it happens. Everyone fails now and then, so what? On 28 September, delve into other people’s stories of woe, prepare yourself for future epic fails and discover more about Vincent van Gogh’s struggles and failures.
‘Because I myself am not one of those who don’t fail in words either — such people would be perfect — and don’t make the slightest claim to perfection’.
Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo, 7 June 1883.
What can we learn from Vincent about failure?
7 pm, 8 pm & 9 pm
Van Gogh often felt like he had failed. He sometimes had difficulty keeping faith in his own art. In his letters, Vincent frequently wrote about failure and his own failings, but also about the need to persevere in order to move on and improve. This guided tour introduces Vincent’s take on failure. You’ll see what should have been his masterpiece and discover how it was viewed differently in Vincent’s time.
F*ckup Nights Amsterdam
7:30 - 9:15 pm
We are not always open and honest about failure. We’re only human, and nobody is perfect. Although, from a distance, that may appear to be the case. Fckup Nights is here to offer a fresh perspective. They organise inspirational evenings during which daring folk recount their personal or professional fck-ups. Brutal stories of failure, absolute messes and great anecdotes, all putting two fingers up to the pressure that we all put on ourselves. Especially for Vincent on Friday, three ‘F*ckupreneurs’ (an honorary title) share their stories. A true breath of fresh air!
Failure First Aid
8 pm & 9 pm
Nowadays, we’re all sometimes guilty of taking it a bit too far with our boundless ambitions and the idea that success and happiness should be the everyday norm. Philosopher and founder of Stichting Vitamine Z, Simeon Karsten is here to help us to normalise the imperfect side of our lives. With brief meditations, exercises and insights, Simeon makes you more resilient, in preparation for when you next fall flat on your face. After all, the chance of that happening is considerable (but also very healthy).
Silent Tunes Dirty Disco
7 - 9:45 pm
Dance like nobody is watching! Shamelessly and to the music of our favourite DJs from Vunzige Deuntjes; Gurney-Champion and Super Serious. Expect the traditional ingredients from Vunzige Deuntjes (‘Dirty Tunes’) blended with Silent Disco spices: at this Vincent on Friday, it’s time for a brand-new recipe!
Jasper van der Veen
9:30 - 9:45 pm
Comedians are surely some of the most daring performers. They quickly develop a thick skin on stage, as you never know if your joke will please the crowd. This evening, Jasper takes to the Vincent on Friday stage. He’s a captivating comedian with a golden smile and a vicious tongue. His narrative jokes are sometimes based on his own life, sometimes unexpected, but always straight from the heart. Jasper is the final act this evening, so your weekend is guaranteed to start on a high. Please note that this performance is in Dutch.
