For one week before the opening of this exhibition, Venema drew a pattern that suggests a topographic map directly on the wall of the Van Gogh Museum. He hopes that this drawing will make it clear how the act of drawing feels, in response to Van Gogh’s words from letter 274:
‘What is drawing? How does one get there? It’s working one’s way through an invisible iron wall that seems to stand between what one feels and what one can do’.
The title One to One refers to several things: the act of drawing directly on the wall, the 1:1 scale of the map, and the one-to-one dialogue between Venema and Van Gogh.
