Ryan Gander (1976, Chester, England) responded to Van Gogh's letter from 12 November 1881.
Gander received a letter from Van Gogh to his friend the artist Anthon van Rappard about the traditional art academy (which was very set in its ways):
‘that academy is a mistress who prevents a more serious, a warmer, a more fertile love from awakening in you. Let the mistress go’.
Ryan Gander sent artists all over the world a sum of money. He asked them to buy lottery scratch cards and send them to him. The winnings will be used for the new art academy he plans to found, an alternative institute where talented artists will have complete freedom to work.
Gander’s art work consists of the losing scratch cards.
