Viviane Sassen (1972, Amsterdam) responds with 'Axiom / Indigo' to the letter Vincent van Gogh wrote on 18 August 1888.
In this letter, Van Gogh beautifully describes how he uses colours and colour combinations to give meaning to his subject matter:
‘I make a simple background of the richest, most intense blue that I can prepare, and with this simple combination, the brightly lit blond head, against this rich blue background achieves a mysterious effect, like a star in the deep azure’
Sassen uses the same technique in her photograph, with deep blue forms against a more or less orange background. Her photographs often involve colour effects and strong contrasts, bordering on abstraction.
