Navid Nuur (1976, Teheran) responded with ‘I wish they would only take me the way I am’ to Van Gogh's letter from 23 April 1882.
Van Gogh’s statement ‘I wish they would only take me the way I am’ from letter 220 inspired Nuur to paint this piece. He used a very large canvas to make plenty of space for the storm that must have raged inside Van Gogh, and which also rages inside Nuur himself.
Nuur created a vibrating effect by copying Van Gogh’s characteristic brushstrokes from different landscape paintings and superimposing them on each other. He takes the viewer beyond Van Gogh’s beautiful landscapes and shows the true artist with his creative hunger.
Nuur made this piece in 2013, before he was asked to take part in this exhibition, out of both respect for Van Gogh and his own need to make peace with himself.
