Beeldbrekers
The Beeldbrekers, or ReFramers, are a group of students and young professionals who apply their expertise to making the museum more inclusive.
Van Gogh Connects was a research trajectory aimed at the question: how can the Van Gogh Museum be and remain relevant for young adults? To this end, we collaborate not only with these young people themselves, but also with educational institutions and social organisations.
Van Gogh Connects has spent the past four years investigating how the Van Gogh Museum can offer lasting relevance to young Dutch adults with a bicultural background.
Society is changing and new groups are emerging within the public, for whom visiting the museum is not always a reflex and who aren’t yet very familiar with the VGM. To remain relevant to a wide audience, the museum’s inclusiveness policy focuses on young people from Amsterdam, as well as people with physical disabilities and vulnerable elderly citizens.
In the past four years, the Van Gogh Museum has worked with Amsterdam residents in the 18–30 age group to develop forty activities that explore how the museum can be relevant to young people with a bicultural background.
The results of the first case study have been published in The International Journal of the Inclusive Museum. The article draws some initial conclusions that can be used to start working toward the sustainable inclusion of youths with a bicultural background.
Between 2017 and 2025, we had over 50 young adults participate in the Beeldbrekers trajectory. The Beeldbrekers, or ReFramers, are a group of students and young professionals who apply their expertise to making the museum more inclusive.
The Beeldbrekers act as a bridge between the Van Gogh Museum and a new generation of museum visitors. They broaden the museum’s outlook. They ask critical questions and find new points of departure to make the story of Van Gogh relevant to people today.
The Beeldbrekers discover new layers in the perception of the Vincent van Gogh’s life and work and communicate about them. Thanks to this exchange, the museum can continue to develop and to function as a relevant and up-to-date place where as many people as possible feel at home.
Van Gogh Connects has now been implemented. The Beeldbrekers, the vocational program Your Story, My Story, Vincent on Friday, and outreach projects co-created with partners are still being implemented and fall under the Education and Interpretation department. The project has demonstrated the positive impact of cultural engagement on young people regarding their personal well-being, citizenship, social skills, and employment opportunities.
A comprehensive learning path on this scale would not be possible without the support of third parties. The museum has found an extremely valuable partner for Van Gogh Connects in the shape of Fonds 21, which is actively committed to reaching a new and diverse audience for professional art and culture. Fonds 21 is supporting Van Gogh Connects throughout the period both substantively and financially.
