Curator Leo Jansen to Huygens ING/RKD for Mondrian Edition Project.
“We are very proud that our curator Leo Jansen is going to participate in the Mondrian Edition Project of the renowned institute of the RKD, the Netherlands Institute for Art History, and the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands/KNAW. We very much regret that he is going to leave us, but we are convinced that he will apply himself with the same dedication to this ambitious project as he did in the twenty years that he dedicated himself in various capacities to the Van Gogh Museum in general and to the realization of the scholarly edition of the letters of Van Gogh in particular,” according to the Director of the Van Gogh Museum, Axel Rüger.
Leo Jansen has played a role of vital importance for the Van Gogh Museum, as researcher, Head of Research, and, for the last eight years, as Curator of Paintings. Highlights are his contributions to the academic series Van Gogh Studies and exhibitions such as Van Gogh’s Letters. The Artists Speaks (2009) and Vincent. The Van Gogh Museum in the Hermitage Amsterdam (2011).
For 15 years he worked for the Van Gogh Letters Project and during this period he completed a scholarly edition of Van Gogh’s entire correspondence, together with Hans Luijten and Nienke Bakker. In collaboration with the Huygens Institute, he set up the English website and he completed the internationally celebrated publication of Vincent van Gogh – The Letters. The Complete Illustrated and Annotated Edition in six volumes, which was also translated into English and French.
Leo Jansen will remain involved in the Van Gogh Letters Project, among which the publication of translations of Van Gogh’s letters in Turkey, China, Norway and the US. He was also highly involved in the new presentation of our permanent collection that will go on show in the autumn.
