Thankfully, the majority of the prints from Vincent van Gogh’s collection were never separated. The Van Gogh Museum is home to no less than 512 of these prints. However, lots of prints – probably about 100 – did go missing.
Vincent van Gogh swapped the prints with other artists with whom he was acquainted. For example, Emile Bernard wrote that he received ‘a good many’ in exchange for his own work. The brothers Theo and Vincent van Gogh also gave away numerous prints, to their sister Willemien, for example.
Several of the prints owned by Van Gogh ended up elsewehere in the world. Some of them are in museums, and some of them are with families of previous owners.
