Quost was best known as a painter of flowers, with hollyhocks as his particular speciality. Here, pink and white hollyhocks take pride of place in the foreground of a lush, sun-drenched garden. Van Gogh admired Quost’s paintings of hollyhocks. The loose brushwork and fresh colours inspired his own floral still lifes, which he painted in Paris during the summer months of 1886.
After Vincent’s death, Quost wished to offer Theo a painting he believed Vincent would have cherished. He chose this work, inscribing on the reverse: ‘For Theo van Gogh. The painting my friend Vincent loved so much.’
