Peasant Family at the Table

The peasant meal was a popular subject for artists in the late 19th century and became especially well known in the Netherlands through Israëls. At the time, he was one of the country’s most famous painters. This work is one of many variations on the theme that he painted. Van Gogh was an admirer of Israëls’ work. As early as 1874, he listed the artist among ‘painters whom I like very much indeed,’ considering him one of ‘the peasant painters of this century.’
Van Gogh saw this painting at the Goupil gallery in The Hague and deliberately followed in Israëls’ footsteps with his own The Potato Eaters (1885). However, he adopted a completely personal approach. Rather than an idealised image, he painted a raw portrayal; ‘a REAL PEASANT PAINTING.’
