In 1910, Van Dongen travelled through North Africa. Fascinated by the local cultures, he made several portraits of women in traditional dress. One such portrait is Mina Tandja, inspired by an Amazigh woman. This is evident in the markings on her chin, her eyes rimmed with black kohl, the jewellery around her neck, and the red cloth on her head.
Inspired by Van Gogh, whose work he had seen at Paris exhibitions, Van Dongen experimented with colour and form. Characteristic of this painting are the large areas of colour and the expressive brushwork.
