Theo and Vincent were no doubt taken with this work, which they acquired for their shared collection. Lepère painted rue Lepic in Paris, where the brothers moved to in June 1886. From this vantage point, they lived a little farther up the street, on the fourth floor of number 54.
Visible at the left in the painting is part of the Moulin de la Galette, a popular venue at the heart of Montmartre’s social life, where people gathered for leisure and enjoyment. To the north of the Moulin lay vegetable gardens and a vineyard. In Montmartre, busy streets alternated with more pastoral pockets of land.
