The surviving letters don’t offer any indication that Vincent was gay. He hoped to find a woman to share his life with, but after a couple of failed romances, he turned his full attention to art.
For human intimacy, he regularly visited prostitutes. On 8 October 1888, he wrote in a letter to Theo that he’d been without company for a while: ‘Because for at least 3 weeks I haven’t had enough to go and have a screw for 3 francs’.
