In this self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh, you can see him wearing a hat and smoking a pipe. He painted himself in different ways because he wanted to practise portrait painting.
He often didn't have the money for a model, so he used himself as the model instead. In this self-portrait, the smock, hat and background are made up of large, outlined areas of colour. The face and beard are painted more detailed using different tones.
