ASML will become a main partner of the Van Gogh Museum for a period of five years, as the museum’s Partner in Science. A significant element of the Van Gogh Museum’s mission is the management and preservation of its collection. ASML will support the museum with (research into) conservation activities, thereby also helping to reach and inspire future generations with the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries.
Research and education
In additional to a substantial financial contribution – to support museum ventures such as work in their conservation studio – ASML will make a team of researchers available to assist the museum in research focused on conservation of the collection.
The collaboration is also focused on facilitating educational activities. A PhD research position and/or a university chair will be created and ASML will support the museum’s teaching materials for primary and secondary schools, and assist in expanding the existing range.
In the teaching programme Van Gogh Goes to School, the life and work of Vincent van Gogh is combined with technology. The lessons focus on light, perspective, colours and geometric shapes in Van Gogh’s work.
‘Born and bred in Brabant, Vincent van Gogh was a rebel and a trailblazer’, says Peter Wennink, CEO and President of ASML. ‘He was inspired by light and it was key to his work, as it is to ours. This partnership provides us with the opportunity to help to preserve the heritage of Van Gogh in Amsterdam, and through this heritage, to share our expertise on light with a broad audience’.
ASML’s headquarters are in Brabant, the Netherlands, and the Brabant connection between Van Gogh and ASML will be emphasised in the museum: the gallery in which The Potato Eaters (1885) is on display (painted in Nuenen, Brabant) will be renamed the ASML Gallery.
