Meijer de Haan in the collection

At the end of May, the Van Gogh Museum will present for the first time The Valley of Kerzellec, Le Pouldu (1890) by Meijer de Haan (1852–1895). The recently acquired painting will be shown together with other works by the artist from the museum’s collection and a long-term loan, creating a rare overview of De Haan’s work.

The painting dates from De Haan’s most important period in Brittany, where he worked alongside Paul Gauguin. It reflects his experimentation with colour and form and his development of a highly personal style.
De Haan was closely connected to Theo van Gogh, who introduced him to the Parisian art world. Through Theo, Vincent van Gogh also became familiar with his work and De Haan and Van Gogh considered each other as artistic allies.
By temporarily bringing together several works, the museum offers a broader perspective on an artist who is only represented by a small number of works in Dutch public collections.
The presentation opened on 27 May 2026 at the Van Gogh Museum.
