Van Gogh differed from the majority of his contemporaries in that he did not sign most of his paintings. What made him choose the works he did sign? Which were they and what is distinctive about his signatures?
To answer these questions, Julia Engelmayer drew up a comprehensive list for her master’s thesis of all the paintings bearing Vincent van Gogh’s signature. The survey has now been published with an accompanying article: Simply ‘Vincent’: An Overview of Van Gogh’s Signed Paintings.
