Monet was just 24 years old when he painted this seaside view in Normandy, likely near Honfleur. The scene is devoid of people, with the focus entirely on nature: a rolling dune landscape contrasts against a cloudy sky and turquoise water. Only the roof of a fisherman’s hut or beach house, glimpsed through the trees, hints at any human presence.
Thanks to the Barbizon School painters, landscape painting had gained greater appreciation as a genre. In the mid-19th century, they captured the untouched nature of the Fontainebleau Forest. Monet had spent time there, gathering fresh inspiration, shortly before he painted this tree-lined coastal scene.
