In 1882, Van Gogh made a series of cityscapes in The Hague (NL) at the request of his uncle Cor. It was his first paid commission after becoming an artist less than two years earlier. This work is a 'portrait' of part of the stately old city of The Hague: the bridge at the corner of Herengracht and Prinsessegracht. Van Gogh had a hard time drawing the bridge in accurate perspective. So he changed its shape slightly, as shown by a photograph of the same bridge. Uncle Cor was satisfied and ordered another series of cityscapes, this time of Amsterdam.

- Commissioned by the artist and sold to his uncle Cor van Gogh, Amsterdam for NLG 2,50, March 1882; sale 13-15 May 1902 The Hague, Nijhoff en De Vries (Catalogue d'une belle collection [...] formant les collections de M. Ph. Zilcken), lot 437 (Coin du Heerengracht et Prinsengracht et vue sur le Boschbrug à La Haye), remained unsold; bought by the sister of the artist Lies du Quesne van Bruchem-van Gogh, Baarn, after 1902; after her death on 29 November 1936 inherited by her daughter R.W. Riem Vis-du Quesne van Bruchem, Amersfoort; sold by R.W. Riem Vis-du Quesne van Bruchem to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, Amsterdam, June 1968; given on loan until the opening of the museum on 2 June 1973 to the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; on permanent loan to the Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh from 2 June 1973 and at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, since 1 July 1994.
