Van Gogh versus Gauguin: Friendship, Competition, Rivalry; Simplification, Distortion, Drama
By Prof Belinda Thomson (Honorary Professor Edinburgh College of Art).
This lecture examines the tendency in art history to compare prominent artists, in the belief that we can better understand the individual artists by setting them alongside each other.
Van Gogh and Gauguin are two artists who are often compared in this way. This comparison is commonly fuelled (and coloured) by correspondence and their encounters.
How balanced or useful has the comparison between Gauguin and Van Gogh been over the years?
