Exhibition ‘Van Gogh along the Seine’
This pioneering exhibition explores how the area along the Seine in the Paris suburbs was crucial to the artistic development of artists such as Van Gogh, Signac, and Bernard.
Between 4 November 2023 and 14 January 2024, a ‘Van Gogh along the Seine’ ferry will travel between Amsterdam Central Station and the NDSM Wharf. On this special ferry, six photographers will present new work inspired by the changing city and the work of Vincent van Gogh.
The six photographers were inspired by the fringes of the River IJ, as well as by the paintings made by Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries in the outskirts of Paris.
The interplay between nature, industry and urban growth was a theme that intrigued Van Gogh and other painters including Seurat, Signac, Bernard and Angrand. At the end of the 19th century, they often ventured out of the city to paint in the suburbs of Paris, on the banks of the Seine. Their work is currently on display in the exhibition Van Gogh along Seine at the Van Gogh Museum.
The changing city is a subject that still fascinates artists. Especially for the Amsterdam Ferry Festival, six photographers have made new work, which will be exhibited on the ferry between Amsterdam Central Station and the NDSM Wharf from 4 November 2023 onwards.
