The free teaching manual 'Van Gogh in close-up' encourages students to look at Van Gogh’s work from a technical perspective.
Van Gogh’s studio practice
For many years now, the Van Gogh Museum has been conducting research into the way in which Van Gogh worked and the materials he used. This teachers’ guide provides lesson plans that will enable your students to identify with the researcher as well as with the painter himself. The lesson plans in this teachers’ guide are suitable for physics and technology classes in the final years of secondary school.
Sight, discolouration and research techniques
The teachers’ guide focuses on three themes:
- Sight: How do you see colour and how did Van Gogh take advantage of this process?
- Discolouration: Is the colour you see today the colour that Van Gogh actually painted?
- Research techniques: How do researchers know that there is something concealed beneath the paint?
