Joke de Boer asks whether Van Gogh ever had trouble parting with a painting once it was finished. Read on for the answer.
Nowhere in Vincent’s letters is it mentioned that he had difficulty parting with his works. As soon as the paint was dry enough, he posted his paintings to his brother. What perhaps helped is that Vincent only sold a limited number of paintings, so he wasn’t parted from them for long.
All of his works were either stored at someone’s house – at his mother’s or brother’s place, in the space rented from Julien Tanguy, or in his own home. It doesn’t appear that Vincent lingered for too long on what he had created. He was keen to move on to his next piece.
