Mario Molinari asks how many languages Van Gogh could speak and understand. Read on for the answer.
Vincent naturally spoke Dutch, his native language, but also French and English. He taught himself these other languages during his years as an art dealer in Paris and London, and later as an artist in France. Vincent also enjoyed reading, both in French and English. He sometimes also ventured into German literature.
Starting in 1886 when Vincent moved to France, he wrote in French to his brother Theo (who was also working in Paris). That’s the clearest proof we have that Van Gogh had no problem expressing himself in French.
