Lori Nowlin asks where Vincent stored his paintings over the years. Discover the answer.
That depends on the period of his life. When Vincent left the Netherlands late in 1885, he left a lot of works at his mother’s place. He sent certain works to his brother Theo in Paris, in return for the financial support he received from Theo.
In Paris, Vincent lived with his brother, and when he left for Arles in 1888, he left his works behind. Vincent sent nearly all of what he produced in the South of France to Paris. Some of the remaining works decorated the walls, and the rest were scattered around the house.
When Theo moved in with his wife, he rented a small space from Julien Tanguy, an art collector and dealer who also sold artist’s supplies. Tanguy regularly displayed Van Gogh’s work in his shop and Vincent painted portraits of him on three occasions.
