John Goffe Rand invented the paint tube in 1841. Paint from a tube dried out less quickly and also had a better consistency and more intense colours than paint produced by artists themselves.
By the time Van Gogh had firmly settled on paint as his medium (1883), paint tubes were the norm. He bought his own tubes of paint, or ordered them via Theo, who often sent large amounts in a single delivery.
