Anita Willemse asks whether Vincent ever missed the Netherlands. Check out the answer.
Late in 1885, Van Gogh moved from Nuenen to Antwerp and from there, on to Paris. He would never return to the Netherlands. In Southern France, late in his life, Vincent revived contact with his mother. She lived with his sister Willemien (Wil), and Vincent occasionally wrote to them.
Repeated bouts of his illness left Vincent feeling isolated and depressed, and a certain nostalgia for the Netherlands and his youth is evident in his final letters to his mother. Shortly before his death, he wrote in a letter: ‘I often think of you both, and would very much like to see you again’, but that was never to be.
