Galuh Indri Wiyarti asks what Vincent’s funeral was like. Read on for the answer.
Van Gogh shot himself in the chest on 27 July 1890 and died of his injuries two days later, with his brother Theo at his side. He was buried the following day – 30 July 1890.
Theo completed all the official documents at the town hall and sent out invitations. He even included the train departure times, in an attempt to ensure as many people came as possible. He hung his brother’s paintings in the public areas of the Auberge Ravoux, where Vincent rented a room – the paint on some of them still wet.
People who attended Vincent’s funeral included Julien Tanguy (the Parisian art dealer) and the artists Lucien Pissarro, Emile Bernard and Charles Laval. From the village itself, Dr Gachet naturally also attended, the physician with whom Van Gogh had become friends in the preceding two months. Yellow flowers adorned Vincent’s coffin.
