Engelbert Broich asks what Vincent’s favourite subject was at school. Discover the answer.
It was actually playing truant, if we can call that a subject. Going to school wasn’t Vincent’s favourite pastime; although he was clever, his headstrong character clashed with various strict schoolmasters.
In his younger years, it appears that Vincent was fond of collecting: on his long walks, he’d collect things including flowers, beetles and bird’s nests. Once back home, he carefully categorised all his findings. Later in life, he paid local children to collect nests for him, which then became the subject of several paintings.
