This domestic scene of a family in a humble interior is exceptional within Van Gogh’s later work. He based it on a print by Millet from the series Les quatre heures de la journée (the four times of day). It features some particularly striking elements: the dominant tints of green and purple, and the centrally-placed lamp that casts long, multicoloured shadows on the floor.
