Amour - Nos âmes en des gestes lents, 1898
Maurice Denis (1870-1943)
This lithograph is part of a series entitled Amour (Love), which Maurice Denis produced in 1897 for the art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard, in return for the then considerable sum of 1200 francs. The titles of the 12 prints together form a poem. All these titles can be found in Denis’ journal. ‘Against the background of music (…) our souls approached each other with slow movements’, he wrote one Sunday afternoon. This sentence provided the inspiration for this print of two women at a table, one holding a sheet of music, the other a rose.
