Winners 2nd round of 'Take a snapshot!' photo competition announced

The three winners of the 2nd round of Take a Snapshot!, the global photo competition organised by the Van Gogh Museum, have been announced. The jury –which included photographer Patricia Steur – selected the winners from the 1000 photographs which were submitted, in the category ‘City Life in Amsterdam’. This digital photography competition by the Van Gogh Museum covers the three themes of the exhibition Snapshot. Painters and photography, 1888-1915 and is organised via such channels as Facebook. The exhibition can be seen until 8 January 2012 in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Each month features a different theme: in December members of the public are invited to send in their photos on the theme ‘Posing in Amsterdam’. All the entries, as well as the winning photos from each month, will be on display in the museum. There are great prizes for the winners, including a Canon camera.

Vespa by Waldemar Ostrowski from Polen
Jury member Patricia Steur on the winner of the best Snapshot: “This photo is so Amsterdam! Everybody is riding around on a scooter, which isn't surprising with all the parking problems. The Amsterdam houses mirrored in the canals mean it's unmistakably Amsterdam. I think this photo is great in all its straightforwardness. The photographer has really taken a good look at the details!’

Fun in Amsterdam from Lisette Steinmetz from the Netherlands. Jury member Edwin Becker, curator at the Van Gogh Museum, on the winning photo in the theme ‘City life in Amsterdam’: “The response on this occasion was overwhelming, but only a handful of photographers managed to capture that unique city feeling and the surprising city life (and particularly the liveliness) of Amsterdam. The vast majority of the enormous number of photographs were great shots of houses, street views and romantic bikes. But in this shot, I found an original joie-de-vivre, the humour and comfort of friends spending time together. The expressions of the different people - one laughing ebulliently, another looking into the lens with a slightly timid expression - give their characters a sense of concrete individuality. And there is a typical Amsterdam feel in the day-to-day atmosphere in combination with a trace of bold absurdity.’’

The Public Award went to the photo Cold winter in Amsterdam from Cristina Montenegro from the Netherlands. This photo attracted the most votes from the Van Gogh Museum’s more than 26,000 Facebook fans. Cristina Montenegro about her winning snapshot: “With this picture I wanted to capture the beauty of Amsterdam in a foggy day. I took it on my first day in this city so it’ll always be very meaningful to me. Thanks to everyone who voted for it and thanks to my parents who will be very proud!”
