Friday Night

On Friday nights the Van Gogh Museum is open until 22.00 and there’s always something special going on. Every Friday night, lounge chairs, video projections, live music, DJs and a bar transform the museum’s central hall into a relaxed place to meet.

Conservatoire on stage: KIPAH

Kipah, Aki Matsugi and Paula Chico present an airy dialogue between a gamut of brass (bugle, Flügelhorn, trumpet) and a range of bells and skins (snare drums, castanets and  tambourine).

Paul Gauguin. The breakthrough into modernity

Inspired by the 1889 World's Fair in Paris, the Van Gogh Museum Friday nights will present the latest interactive art-technology installations, demonstrated by students and sector professionals. These Friday nights have been compiled in collaboration with:

  • The Media Technology department at Leiden University
  • The Augmented Reality research project currently being conducted at the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts in The Hague
  • The Art, Media and Technology faculty at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU)
  • De Praktijk (scientific education and communication) and  Very Disco
  • Bas van Druijten, trend spotter and staff writer for Eye and Fonk magazines
  • Geert Christiaansen, Philips Research Center

During the Van Gogh Museum Friday nights visitors will be able to view recent graduate work and installations and to experience them actively. Each Friday night the designer(s) of the installations will engage in conversation, shedding light on the research, their points of departure, aims and results.  
 

De Praktijk & Very Disco

De Praktijk presents an innovative scientific and technological programme in collaboration with Very Disco, based loosely on programmes from earlier Discovery series.
19.30: Brain specialist Marijtje Jongsma talks about how the mind works when we view objects.
20.30: Wisebits: short films on scientific phenomena
Throughout: Get your photograph taken in  3D by the Delft Technical University

DJ Goldfinger

Alongside his gigs at Salon USSR and Moskow Diskow, Russian DJ Maxim Shaposhnikov has produced music and soundtracks for various art forms. Each of his sets in the museum achieves a perfect harmony with the atmosphere of the city and the theme of the current exhibition. www.kidnaprecords.nl

The Reaction Machine

This interactive installation plays with the tension between two people. Old and new technologies are combined in this machine, that splices recordings by the previous user with those of the next. It's the user's response that determines how the work of art is created.

Outrandom

Outrandom is a game of which the only object is to press buttons as randomly as possible. The computer game calculates nearly all human movements, and so people can only win by playing as randomly as they can.
